I was very interested to hear Gavin Short's experiences on LPG. I had a few hiccups at the start - the people who fitted my system are very familiar with SAABs but new to LPG. Also, because Autogas 2000 had said they didn't recommend converting any turbo, they wouldn't give any technical assistance - however they would take money for the parts (!).

I started with a consumption of about 15 mpg - which had to be wrong. After many measurements I made a gizmo to monitor the lambda sensor, which lo and behold was showing correct combustion. The only other explanation was a leak. After sniffing around a bit I took the rather drastic step of waving a lighted match around the DAT valve (outdoors and with a fire-extinguisher in the other hand). The whole valve erupted into flames, and on investigation it turned out that the valve wasn't sealed. We eventually sealed it ourself with gasket compound - why on earth Tartarini didn't see fit to do the same I don't know. You can imagine how much gas was going through once the LPT got going as the gas is delivered at the same pressure as the inlet air!

I then had a problem of weak mixture at lowish throttle settings, which was cured by fitting a higher capacity mixer ring.

I had a chat with Stuart Howe on the phone who was very helpful. I think the systems he fits are a bit more sophisticated than mine, but it is working well now, and I get about 22 mpg - up to 24 occasionally and down to about 20. I notice that the engine seems to run smoother at speed -only problem is that the exhaust pipe seems to rust more.
