>> I used bars leak in my 99 to temporaraly seal up an very small external headgasket leak. It worked for about two weeks.
Aaron, nobody said Bar's Leaks was a panacea that would miraculously fix any cooling system malady. If you remove your lower radiator hose, for example, it won't fix that leak. There is a limit to the size of perforation the product will seal, and I assume it is less than a 24-gauge mesh screen, which is the spec provided by the Big Three as their criterion for stop leak products. To meet that spec, a sealant must be able to flow through this size hole; thus I assume if your perforation is bigger the product won't fix it. FWIW, BL is the only stop-leak formula that passes this test.
Rather than label it a blanket "half-ass fix," get your facts together. You're pissed because it didn't fix the headgasket leak in your 99, so what did you lose, $2.00? You tried and it didn't work, so go on to Plan B and get over it. Your problem apparently exceeded the limits of the product, which doesn't mean it won't fix 95% of cooling-system leaks.
>> Another solution would to simply find it a good used radiator.
Yeah right, spend a few hundred clams before trying a $2 fix that might work. A friend who owns his own crane repair company told me he's seen BL plug radiator leaks that "looked like me taking a leak." He said he has actually watched them subside and stop within minutes, and uses BL frequently in his business since I first introduced him to it 10 years ago.
>> Even if the Bars Leaks does work, it will probably offend your mechanic that you didn't take their advise.
Screw the mechanic and his foolish pride. Even the best technicians and artisans have things to learn. I've been a commercial photographer for 25 years and I learn something new every other day, some things shattering long-held myths and legends of the business. If someone pointed out some technique that was better than what I was using, I might be embarassed but certainly amenable to the suggestion.
