If you do buy it, have a complete flush with synthetic ATF (preferably AMSOIL) included as part of the agreement. If he won't go for that, try having him provide the labor and you provide the fluid.
Synthetic ATF will greater decrease the probabilty of transmission problems. My 85 900T now has over 190K on it, my kids ran an 86 900 over 200K before losing it from failure to check the final drive
