Some folks do it, but I'm not clear on the economics.
You can get an autobox for about $2500. That's about the price of a quality rebuilt from Eriksson Industries, installed. That gives you a fresh autobox that should be good for another 100K+ miles.
As an alternative, you can convert to a manual. I see this making sense only if you have access to a KNOWN GOOD manual tranny for cheap. Basically, you need to get a donor car in known good shape. It would make no sense to put in a fresh manual tranny - a rebuilt manual must be about the same price as an automatic. You will need a significant amount of extra hardware - linkages and levers and wiring and a new radiator for the tranny oil cooler - and it wouldn't be economic to do it unless you had a donor car - you wouldn't want to buy all that stuff new. And if you want to do it really right, you'll want to swap out the EDU, as it is different between automatic and manual cars. There may even be differences in the ABS and engine controls.
If you did have a donor car, you want to be sure the manual has a lot of life left in it before you go through all the sturm und drang.
I see doing a manual for auto swap if you your present autobox is well and truly dead, you want to do a lot of the work yourself, and you have a source for a cheap manual AND all the hardware - a donor car available. If you're going to have someone else do the work, it will be much more expensive than just replacing it with another autobox.
Again, I'm not sure of the logic here. The autobox has problems, but they're usually good for at least 100K miles. If your autobox dies young at 80K, what you're saying is that you're going to spend $$$ over and above the price of a fresh autobox to put in a manual, and you're doing this so you'll thank yourself when the car has 180K on it. Because at 180K, the autobx may die. Or it may still be going strong - Damn! Do you expect to Still have the car at 180K? Are you going through all this extra hassle now, and some goat-roper in a Chevy Subdivision takes it out the entire back half in a parking lot at 130K?
Again, I can see doing it because you really want a manual, you got a car super cheap with a dead autobox, and you have a donor car waiting, and either a garage and lots of time, or a brother-in-law in the bizness.
