In my neck of the woods there are no shops that work on the ZF, except no warranty or replacement for US$4000 plus labour. I tried a shop that had a very good reputation but didn' want to give warranty. Tranny didn't shift properly, on a long trip I lost one gear after another and ended up with a large towing bill. I converted, replaced all bearings in the tranny which can be done by any DIYer and am very happy with the conversion.
Nobody has been able to point out any of the "improvements" on the ZF, the rebuild kits are all the same and after having had some trouble with the intermediate bearing and on that occasion becoming familiar with the confusins SAAB parts numbering, where identical parts have different numbering, I wouldn't be surprised if the improvements were different parts numbers for the same part. As far as I know the improvement came with the 9-5 and the Warner-Aisin.
