Battery Discharged After One Month of Not Being Used

My slightly over three year old Saab-brand battery couldn't start the car after one month of the car not being used. After I charged the battery, in place, with a charger for about an hour, the car was able to start, and things seem back to normal now after several short trips.
Is this normal? Is the parasitic load such that one month is going to cause a significant discharge of a battery? Anyone measured the current from the battery with the car "off"?
Or is this a sign that my three year old battery is nearing the end of its life?
Looking back at my records, I see that my original Saab battery, supposedly with a 48 month warranty, developed a faulty cell after less than two years and had to be replaced. My second Saab battery, supposedly with a 50 month warranty, wouldn't hold a charge after two years and had to be replaced. My third and current Saab battery supposedly has a whopping 60 month warranty, so maybe that's why it's still working after three years, huh...
