What year is your car? The early ones had a separate belt for the AC. All the later cars use one serpentine belt which drives all accessories, including the AC compressor.

Stand by the right fender and look at the AC compressor with the engine off. The middle of the pulley is a round disc with some bolts on it.

Now start the car and turn the ACC to "LO". Is the disc with the bolts moving? It should be moving very fast. If it is moving, then the compressor is working and your problem is elsewhere.

If the disc with the bolts (which is the "clutch") is not moving, then unplug the electrical connector to the compressor and see if there is voltage. If there is voltage and the clutch is not turning, then your compressor is bad. If there is no voltage to the compressor, then there are a host of other things which could be causing the problem ranging from a loss of refrigerant to a blown fuse to a bad relay to a malfunction in the ECU......also including a failed compressor. The point is that there are a lot of other things which could be causing you to be hot than the compressor.

One other thing to check. Look at the underside of the hood (you may call it a bonnet, which means a girl's hat to me) above where the ac compressor is when the hood is shut. Is there a dark stripe of an oil substance running along the underside of the hood? If there is, that is evidence of a catastrophic compressor failure.
