Just because the compressor is being driven it does not mean that it is bad - there could be a leak somewhere in the system which would mean you were low on refrigerant - the compressor would not kick in if this was the case.
If you want to test the compressor then apply 12v to the wire leading to it - this should operate the clutch which would tell you that at least that part is functioning. Only do this briefly - you don't want to run the compressor if you are low on refrigerant.
You can check round the system looking for leaks - you would see an oily residue. Have a look at the condenser too - mine must have been hit with a stone or something because the bottom corner was damaged and that was the cause of my leak.
Don't bother with second hand parts - the biggest cost is in the refrigerant (assuming you are still on R12) and the labor - you don't want to have to pay for all of that again in a year's time when the used compressor gives out.
I don't see why you would need to go to Saab for A/C work - the components are pretty standard and any decent AC shop should be able to cope with it.
You might be able to source the compressor yourself (if that is the problem) and save money - I assume you are in the UK so the BB advertisers probably aren't much help to you - but there must be similar outfits in the UK.
