I understand the part about Saabs being more exciting.
But is it really true that Japanese cars are really lower maintenance than recent model year Saabs? (Say mid 1990s and newer.) If so, which of the following is true:

2) Things don't necessarily break down more frequently on Saabs, but when they do, they are more expensive in parts and labor cost to fix, so the average maintenance cost per year is higher for Saab.
3) Things don't necessarily break down more frequently on Saabs, but when they do, they are more noticeable and/or critical than on Hondas. Given the same list of things wrong, a Saab owner would be less happy and more inclined to fix them, whereas a Honda owner either wouldn't notice them, or wouldn't care.
4) ... ?
