I replaced the rears on my '93 shortly after I got the car... one was blown, but even the unblown one sounded like crud compared to the cheap ($100) Pioneer 3-way's I replaced them with. In hindsight there was really no reason to go with more than a 2-way, but hey, it was $10 more... The new speakers were a very noticable improvement compared to stock, I think they were probably more efficent and thus played better with the stock amp. 4 months or so later when I sliced out the stock amp and replaced it with a cheap ($60) Pioneer amp (35x2 RMS) the differance was amazing. Last month I finally got my sub system in: Carver 2x120RMS amp (used $90), Adire Audio Shiva 12-inch ultra-long-throw sub ($120 from mfr new), and a homebuilt box ($50 in parts). Now I'm shaking the rearview mirror at stoplights and scaring old folks. I'm amazed at how solid the car is also, the only rattles are from the rear license-plate holder, which I'm going to tighten up soon. Not like those beaterz with the trunk about to fall off from the BASS.
Build your system slowly, research anything you're getting, look for bargains and do it right, and you'll end up with an inpensive, awesome-sounding system. And remember, it's _always_ a work-in-progress.
