The Mark 2 is darned close to the same thing, just maybe a little bit more linear excursion (good) is all I think.
As for simple passive crossovers, I can give you a formula for a first order crossover now, would have to go to the book for second order. It's HIGHLY recommended though, to use electronic crossovers for a subwoofer crossover, because it's generally in the range of 80 Hz. Are you saying you don't have a head unit with preamp outputs? I guess if you are still using the stock deck, that would be true.. You can buy an electronic crossover for about the same price as you pay for a good quality second order passive crossover, and it will be better in every respect.
Anyway for a first order crossover, use the formula:
L = Xl/(2 * pi * f)
L = inductance of the coil, in henries
pi = 3.1416
f = frequency of your crossover in Hz, recommend 50-80 Hz
Xl = impedance of your subwoofer driver at the crossover frequency, in the case of the Shiva, wire the voice coils in parallel, so use four ohms as Xl
So, L = 4/(2 * 3.1416 * 80) = .00796 henries, or 7.96 millihenries. 8 mH will be the closest you will find. It's best to go with large gauge air core coils, but in this value, you'd be easily looking at $30 or more, so go with iron core (also called ferrite core). Put the coil in line with the positive terminal of the woofer. Just keep in mind this will only reduce the woofer output by 6 dB per octave, each octave is twice the frequency of the octave below. So, -6 dB at 160 Hz, -12 dB at 320 Hz, etc.. You may not even notice much difference at all. You could drop the frequency down to 40 Hz, but this will double the value of your coil.
Anyhow! That gives you a start. It's not as horrible as it might be for a home sub, given that in your car, the back seat will act as a pretty good shield for at least the upper midbass and midrange sounds, but it likely will sound more boomy than you want, until you get a second order crossover, either passive or active. If you're interested, I can check the books tomorrow night and come up with a capacitor and coil value for the second order crossover..
Glad to hear you just blew a fuse on the amp.
