You don't get stuck in traffic on a hot day.
All that the engine cares about is engine temperature. The fan only controls the radiator temperature. Of course, if the engine can't dump heat out to the radiator, then it's meltdown time.
Since the temp needle didn't get into the red, you're probably OK. If all you do is do open highway driving, you won't need the fan. But if you get stuck in traffic and there's no airflow over the radiator, you can overheat in a matter of minutes. If you figured to be stuck in traffic not moving for a while, you can shut the engine down. But if you were stuck in crawling traffic, then you could very quickly fry an engine.
But since you didn't hit the red (this time), you're probably fine.
