The unintended pleasures of overcoming TCS limp mode

Now that I have won out over TCS, and no longer have incomprehensible attacks of limp home mode, I am beginning to experience some unintended joys from my persistence in handling this myself.

For one thing, my strategy was to go over the trionic engine management system and the ABS system and clean the electrical connections, the throttle, and replace the vacuum lines. After this, the car ran much better. I also know that if something else goes wrong, I know it's not a bad ground, a dirty throttle valve, or a corroded electrical connection.
To do this all, I had to figure out the names and location of the components. Was this a hassle? Not at all. It was highly interesting and very satisfying to learn the names of the components and begin to understand how they work. Want to know what can cause limp home mode? Just let the car idle and disconnect some of the connections in the system.

Other unintended thrills of pleasure I got from my TCS work came through DC-4, Dow Corning 4 Electrical Insulating Compound. The Wagaero web site amazed me, and then, the catalog came. To me, it's a whole new exciting world of high quality materials and tools, directed to me only because I had to get those older electrical connections in my 1993 9000tcs to perform in the harsh, moist, ambience of the engine compartment.

Then, there is also the question of why I was able to get such a 1993 car for only $6900. In my area, a 1993 BMW 325 with 100,000 miles might be sold for as much as $12000. From reading the TCS posts of the last few days, I would guess that some owners might want to dump their 1992's and 1993's because of TCS limp mode attacks, and others might be deterred from buying a used one. This must drive down the price of these cars.

What other unintended joys? Why, the bulletin board itself. TCS is still a challenge for the brainstorming that ocurrs here. There are few clear answers. No quick fixes. It is still a puzzle. There are a lot of clues, but no single procedure. This, to me, makes my involvement with the car much more enjoyable. In a way, the high price of the Tech 2 diagnostic computer ($2000.00), keeping it out of reach, increases interest in following TCS problems. Is the BB making progress on TCS? Are we just going in circles? Where will be a year from today? It's all a pretty interesting technological subject to follow, especially if you are driving it every day.
