So, I called the shop yesterday, and asked to please fax me a the work estimate they had for me and in that estimate tell me:
1. What work they have accomplished
2. What work they intend to do
This is what I got, with no numbers attached to the fax:
1. "What we have done: We have removed the cylinder head and found the timing chain worn out badly"
2. "What we intend to do: We intend to have the cylinder head pressure tested and re-surfaced. Will replace various gaskets and seals including: water pump o-rings and themostat gasket. We will also replace the timing chain tensioner, which is part of the original estimate."
Weird.
When they called me about the timing chain, without giving me an idea of how the job might breakdown as far as parts and labour goes, they said, "oh its another 600 to 800 dollars, because you already have the head off."
Uh, right... I talked to the mechanic later that day, and he was pretty straight forward about the condition of the timing chain... It didn't sound as bad as the service manager made it sound...(by the way, I had an 900 '87 that had a timing chain begin to go, it really affected the way the car ran, and I replace it promptly.. This car shows NO sign of having the timing chain failing.)
Then on top of that, said service manager offered to do a valve job for another $400 to 500..
After reading some of the earlier posts in regards to the warped cylinder, I think this shop is trying to take me for a ride...
At this point, I have been very straight forward with them and asked for them to only to resurface the head, nothing else... And now am wondering if it really needed it all!
The shop has been around since the mid-80's and I have never heard anything bad, but I've never run into something like this before with a Saab shop.. My previous shop was a little independent shop in Monterey, and they did not yank folks around.
So, strategy? I plan on hammering them, diplomatically of course, for answers... And, naturally, I won't be paying anything until everything is straightend out.
