I have owned three vw's and have found the experience to be just as addictive and enjoyable as owning a saab. I drove my '86 GTI to 150k before selling it and it drove very well up to that point. The primary red flag to watch for is a tendency for a shaft from the transaxle to walk out of its keeper and bore a hole through the transaxle case, causing failure of the transaxle. This occurrs on '85 and up GTI and GLI transaxles as a result of a C clip that was ommitted in assembly, and due to the lower drive ratio, which increase the rate at which this shaft turns. A lathe-like grinding sound emanating from the transaxle or a visible oil leak from the casting of the transaxle are signs that tansaxle failure is approaching. The good news is that parts are relatively inexpensive and labor is reasonable. Have a technicial check the car over for you and ask him or her to check the transaxle, water pump, half-shafts, clutch and cooling system. (radiators tend to plug up at higher mileage is not properly maintained).
As I said earlier, these are well made cars, that other than the transaxle of these few years, are very well made. I can't think of another make that provides as many grins of driving pleasure for the dollar and that are easily maintianed.
