Great cars, before graduating to a 900S, I had three; a 79 Scirocco, 85 Scirocco and an 86 GTI, the latter two bought used. All were run up to 125,000 to 150,000 and still looked good. The neat thing is that you can upgrade early models by picking up improved parts in a dismantler/junk yard. Bigger brakes, four wheel discs, wheels and leather interiors. Oh, to have a VR6 in that 1900 lb 79 Scirocco.
Warning about the self machining tranny is correct, cars are sensitive to worn plugs/Bosch distributor parts and O2 sensor condition. Replace the strut bearings when you do the struts. Get back issues of european car for reprint articles when they were a VW only mag. Like SAABs, the brand enjoys an enthusiatic owners support network. Enjoy it.
