'96 Aero failed UK emissions test

I took my car for its MOT (UK annual inspection) this morning and it failed the emissions test. CO is tested at idle (it passed this test), and CO, HC and lambda at fast idle (1950-2550RPM). CO and HC were fine (zero!), but lambda was 1.050 on the first run and 1.043 on the second run. Limits are 0.970-1.030.
I've can't remember how lambda relates to air/fuel ratio (although I know 1.0 lambda is 14.7:1). Does greater than 1.0 mean I'm running too rich or too lean?
This is the first test since fitting the JT 3" exhaust system with a CatCo 3" cat a few weeks ago. Since CO and HC pass, I'm assuming the cat is OK. Is this a valid assumption?
I have an O2 sensor fitted that was a used unit. I had a universal sensor on it but was not comfortable it was working properly. Should I try refitting that? I've been quoted between £120 and £320 for a Saab part from the dealer (depending on whether the parts guy thought the Aero had a "special" sensor).
Could the problem lie elsewhere?
I have one chance for a free re-test. If I fail that, I'll have to pay for a full test again. Any ideas on how I can go back for the re-test with a good level of confidence? My certificate runs out on Tuesday. Regardless of having to pay again, I need to have it sorted out by then.
