A wierd idle is the curse of early 9ks! Fortunatly it's not expensive to fix, though the diagnosis can be a pain. Chances are good it's a vacuum leak and as you just got the car, it certainly wouldn't hurt to replace all the vacuum hoses anyway. These are the small diameter hoses that run from the intake manifold to various plces in the engine bay. They are 4mm and are available at any parts store, though it wouldn't hurt to get silicon ones available at http://www.hosetechniques.com. They'll basically last forever and look real purty too. Check all the hoses to make sure they haven't popped off and for cracks. Pull the hose off the 'hooter' valve which is the black cannister shaped thing connected to the intake tract and suck on it. It should hold vacuum. If not replace for ~$40. Next try the hose that connects the charcoal cannister. It disapears into the US passenger side fender. It too should hold vacuum. If your boost gauge isn't working then the hose going to the gauge might have popped off. Check everything carefully. If none of this helps try giving the AIC valve (gold thing on top and to the front of intake manifold) a quick wack when the engine is idling high and see if it goes back to normal. Otherwise check out the link below and follow the directions to clean the throttle body (a good thing to do anyway,) reset base idle. Don't worry, you'll get it sorted out with a little effort! The major problem it could be is the AMM, which is quite expensive to replace.
