It would be good to explore what your mechanic means by 'shot'. A transmission leak doesn't mean the tranny is shot, not unless the case is cracked. If it's just a seal, that can be fixed.
What else, if anything, is wrong with the transmission? Are the shifts harsh and clunky? Is there a pause between shifts, when the engine overrevs? Does the transmission shift too early or too late? Those are signs of transmission problems.
If the tranny is shifting fine but just leaks, you've got two choices. If the leak is small, you can feed it. If the leak is big, find the leak and fix it.
If the tranny is shifting poorly, then the choices come into play. Some tranny problems are cheap and easy to fix - new valve body springs for about $75 DIY, maybe $200 by a shop. Shift points off? New govenor seals are about $300-$400 (by a shop). Both operations can be done in-car.
If the tranny is well and truly shot, you can get a rebuilt from Eriksson on the order of $1800, but assume another $400-$600 for labor to install it (a transmission does you no good if it's just sitting in a box in your livingroom).
You can get a shop to rebuild the transmission. I've had it done. But if the tranny is going to get pulled, you might as well replace all the moving /wear parts. In my experience, you'll pay about as much to have a shop do a rebuild as it would to buy a rebuild (from Eriksson) and have the shop install it. The advantage of Eriksson is that they rebuild A LOT of Saab transmissions. I'll bet you'll have a hard time finding a shop that does more than one or three a year. It's like surgery - do you want to go to a surgeon that does one or two procedures a year, or to one that has a ton of experience and all the right tools?
But other than the leak, does the tranny shift fine? If it does, fix the leak and drive on!
