To understand the difference between a Saab (or other European cars)you need to understand the difference between reliability and durability. Japanese cars tend to be reliable for 100,000 to 150,000 miles and then it's like everything tends to go at once. The bodies rust (in the snow belt) the interiors fall apart, etc. and they get to a point where they simply aren't worth repairing. Saabs tend to be more apt to have occassional mechanical problems, but the difference is that if they are properly cared for, the bodies and interiors (and all of the associated bits and pieces) are very indestructible. If you keep repairing them, they'll keep going for as many miles as you want to drive them. The big difference between Saabs and Japanese cars is that you'll actually ENJOY driving them that long. Even with 200,000 or 300,000 miles they still drive better than a lot of new cars--which is why people are willing to keep putting money into their Saabs. The biggest expense in owning a car is depreciation, not mechanical repairs. If you get 200,000 out of one Saab instead 100,000 out of two Mazdas, you'll save at least ten grand even if you have to rebuild the Saab's engine and trans (which is highly unlikely).
