Ravi -

I bought an '87 9000 turbo with 120K miles earlier this summer for $400. Its rusty and has needed a decent amount of work (I didn't drive it in July or August as it was on jack-stands and currently the transmission is on the garage floor) and I've loved working on the car. I didn't really know anything about car maintainence in May and now I feel pretty competent. After I bought the car the clutch hydraulics went out. It has been gratifying to put everything back together and only spend $150 on parts instead of the $1200 it probably would have cost me at a local garage. That's the kick in the teeth, as long as you enjoy doing repairs (in the same way that some people enjoy gardening) you'll love the Saab (I do) If you're not mechanically inclined and have little intention to become so it may not be as much of a joy to you - and the repair bills, when they come, will probably be substantial. That said I agree with all previos posts on the excitement of driving the 9000.

In my view its status as a "cult" car is certainly justified. If you love the Saab you'll love it forever, though I suppose that depends on your personality. It certainly is a more interesting car to drive than my friend's Accord.

One other interesting trait is the Saab's enourmous hatchback. Earlier in the summer I fit a full size dryer in the back of the Saab and CLOSED the hatch. A friend that came along to help me lift it was speechless.

If you do decide to buy one make sure to pay the extra money for a Turbo. The performance is dramatically superior (before '91 160HP turbo vs 130 HP normal, after '90 200HP turbo vs 140 HP normal aspiration)
