The Saab is my new fascination, but for the last 7 1/2 years, my only car was an ancient (1979) Subaru 4wd wagon. I didn't appreciate its performance generally (0 to 60 in 1 minute flat, top speed of about 67 mph with ambient noise of about 120 dB) but once the roads are snowy or icy, I become a GOD. Last Thanksgiving I drove across the entirety of Washington state during a snowstorm (including the mountain passes) without even slipping once, plowing through 2-foot drifts, passing the SUV's by the side of the road, some of them upside down. I didn't even bother using chains.
As far as reliability, it took about $500 maintenance per year, most always front-end or front-brake work, or the drive-shafts which need to be replaced about every 2.5 years, but I always had plenty of warning when it needed something, and was never once stranded anywhere.
