Subaru is a great car, low maintenance, and definitely my choice in really bad weather. I have had 4 Saabs and 2 Subarus. The Saab is safer if your car contacts another object but in foul weather the Subaru will probably stay on the road. My 9K CS has slid off of my steep driveway twice in one season and slid backwards numerous times on the ice (scary for me). My Subaru goes up the hill (700 ft unplowed) when even my Nissan 4wd with lots of extra weight just sits and spins. (Subaru also has limited slip option). The Subaru doesn't get the body shakes that my Saab gets over rough roads. If the highways are smooth the Saab is more fun to drive (mostly due to the engine torque). If the highways are marginal then my nod goes to the Subaru. Of course the average Saab brakes are stronger than the Subaru but in marginal conditions thats not what you want. The Subaru has ergonomic design issues that the Saab doesn't have. We could go on and on about pluses and minues between the two cars. In my opinion the Subaru would be a great choice for your girlfriend. Perhaps she might even give you a ride to work in the winter when the going really gets rough.
