Well I hope you're at least engaged before you spend a ton of money on just a "girlfriend". Trust me, I got taken for almost $10K, and she was my fiancee too. (before she took off). As far as the car itself is concerned.. I grew up in Connecticut, and now live in the snow belt of western NY, so I am familiar with both ice, and snow driving. I have an 88 9kt which outfitted with good snow tires, I have taken almost everywhere, with no problems. I also have a 2000 nissan frontier quad cab 4wd, which when going off road with (i own 10 acres I like to drive on) is non stopable. The problem with 4wd is that you tend to get this "god" feeling and tend to get careless when driving in hazzardous conditions. I love the control, performance, mileage, etc.. of my saab, even in winter! If you're planning on doing some off-roading, sure go with 4wd (AWD), but if you are living in the city, where occasionally they plow, go with the SAAB! My brother has a forester, what a piece of crap that car is! But he loves it.
If all else fails... ask your girlfriend.
