There have been at least a half dozen postings recently with this complaint. Most likely it is loose bolts that hold the subframe in place. Replacing the rear control arm bushing (a lot of work- refer to other postings, esp. by BillJ) should help. Replacing the bushing clears up a lot of steering play as well.
Bad motor mounts have also been suggested as a cause of popping/thud noise.
