No, you don't have to oil the crankshaft seal befor putting it in. It presses in with just a tap on the socket with a hammer. The inner surface of the seal rides on the outside of the harmonic balancer.
Vasaline - The deal with the vasaline is to pack the pump so that it sucks up the oil faster and delivers oil to the moving surfaces. I didn't do it because, to me, the situation didn't seem that different from when you drain the oil from the engine. You can pull the coil wire and crank the engine a few times to build up oil pressure and be OK in my opinion.
The new o-ring goes into its slot with just finger pressure, or at worst, a blunt flat blade screwdriver. You should be able to push it down with a fingernail.
