Wow! I guessed right on that one (see your previous post). A bad head gasket on an engine with 170,000 miles is certainly not unusual. The fact that the compression didn't change much when you added oil indicates that the compression rings are in good shape. Do you have any brown froth in the crankcase? That is certainly another sign of a bad head gasket, but not a requirement.
Do you plan on doing this yourself, or having it done by an independent?
If you do it yourself, there is a good write up on the Townsend site, I think. There is also a section in the Haynes manual on replacing the head gasket.
I would probably get carried away and replace the chain and chain guides, and send the head out to have it cleaned up at a machine shop.
As I recall, the only special tools you'll need are a torque wrench and an E16 Torx socket (external torx--the socket end looks like a Torx bolt). The torque sequence calls for two stages, plus a 90 degree turn on the wrench for the final stage. (Think about new head bolts. You can then saw off the ends of the old ones and use them to help position the head.)
