ok so I'm lying on my back with the transmission right over me head. My friend is holding up the end of the transmission along with one bolt and one stud coming from the engine. I had done a rough visual alignment of the clutch disc when I first bolted down the pressure plate. After the tranny was up on the studs (which I made by cutting the heads off of long bolts, then notching the ends for a flat screwdriver), my trustworthy friend (and a hydraulic Jack) supported the tranny and I loosened two bolts radially oposed to each-other on the pressure plate so that the clutch disc was barely able to slide around. The friend then "jiggeled" the transmission while I turned the flywheel by pushing on the teeth with a screwdriver (I know that this too is dangerous - I figured If I broke one or two I could still push start the car...)
When the transmission suddenly slipped towards the engine we knew that the clutch plate was properly aligned. From there we backed up the tranny just enough for me to reach in with a 12mm wrench and tighten the two loose bolts.
So I saved five bucks and bloodied my knuckles in the process.
