When it comes to snow tires it's usually best to go one size narrower than stock, and bumping down to a 15" tire isn't a bad idea. You should, of course, keep the tire diameter the same (so you don't throw your odometer and speedometer off), so you won't gain any wheel well clearance. A narrower tire (195 vice 205) concentrates the weight carried by the tire into a smaller area, which allows it to grip better. I'll be honest, I can't explain why that is right now, but I know I've read that in a number of places.
Bumping down to 15" tires is nice because it's cheaper - cheaper wheels and cheaper tires. You're only going to use these wheels/tires for a few months out of the year, why spend the extra $$$ for 16" stuff?
