That sure does sound like a bum AMM. Just a note - I am assuming that your AMM DOES NOT have an adjusting screw. If it has one, you'll know it. An '89 S model should have the non-adjustable AMM - it has a plug where the adjustment screw is. I mention this because the adjustable AMM has a different pinout. I know an 89 S should have the LH2.4, but stranger things have happened.
Just one last check, if you feel like it. Measure pin 1 of the AMM to ground when the engine is running. It should be very close to 0 volts all the time. That's the ground pin for the AMM, and it's always nice to know that you don't have a wiring problem.
