... it's companies. That's why I described mine as a fleet car (Eric's original question asked about fleet cars). I'm not an executive, but am entitled to a company car (I take an allowance instead), and my employer would lease this from a leasing company, who would own it, maintain it, repair it and sell it at the end of the lease. For this reason, and because fleet cars are usually leased over two or three years, leasing companies in the UK are insistent that the car is properly maintained. They don't want to have to fix things on a poorly-maintained vehicle, and want the vehicle to be worth something when they sell it, usually with quite a high mileage.
Personal leasing, although manufacturers have sort of similar schemes now, doesn't happen in the UK. Leasing companies will not deal with individuals, and I believe this is something to do with tax law.
Also, I believe company cars are not common in the US except for people whose job involves driving (e.g. sales people). In the UK, they are commonly provided as an incentive, such as in my own case.
So in my previous post, for "lease car" read "fleet car" and it should be more relevant to your local practice. The two terms are almost synonymous in the UK these days.
