Knowing you did it yourself! If your just doing a basic re-ring and bearing change a good basic set of tools is all you need. You can deglaze the cylinder walls your self with a drill and a hone. Plan on at a minimun having a machine shop "tank" or "boil" the engine and have them check for cylinder bore wear. They can check out your crank and cam if you don't have a micrometer for a very small charge. Have you considered getting a rebuildable engine from a salvage yard? If you shop around the cost should be low. That lets you build it and take your time. You could even have it bored, balanced and blueprinted as funds permit. The toughest part is getting the timing chain right, and it is way easier with the motor out of the car.
