Lock or latch? Posted by Ari [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: door lock very stiff ? 88 9Kt, julz, Mon, 17 Dec 2001 19:48:00 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Is it hard to turn the key (lock), or hard to open the door (latch?). If the key is hard to turn, do what Hans said - spray lubricant into the lock mechanism from the outside. WD-40 works, but I prefer silicone sprays or teflon sprays.
New lock cylinders are available, but then you'd have a different key for the driver's door. If the driver's lock cylinder was badly worn, I'd just swap it for the passenger side cylinder.
If the latch is sticky - It could be a few things. The door handle may be loose; there is a bolt on the jamb side of the door right at latch level - tighen that up. The door may be misaligned, or the mechanism inside the door is binding. For the last one, you need to remove the door panel and lubricate it.
As to a remote locking system - there must be thousands of dealers out there. You'd probably want to get an Saab lock actuator, but you can get that from any junkyard - they're just the actuators from any of the other three doors. Depending on the year, it might be tricky integrating it with the alarm, but a decent installer should be able to handle it.
Good luck!
