I would respectfully disagree. You're not even really 'honing' per se like when you rebore an engine. It's usually standard when reboring to bore out only about half of your intended overbore, then hone to your finish size. When you're doing it in car all you're really doing is breaking the glaze and freshening up the cross hatching. yes, you are going to wash a lot of crap down into the engine, as is inevitable any time you have the head off, scraping all the carbon off the top of the pistons, scraping the top of the block. I was taught that you change the oil after R & R on a head as soon as the engine gets up to temp, and change again after about 500 miles. I did cut the oil filter open after the first change and yeah, there is a whole lot of crap that it trapped!
Anders did get me thinking though, so I ran out and pulled a plug and used a small mirror and a light to look into a combustion chamber. Walls look brand new without any scratches. Guess I'm just lucky :) Maybe it is old skool to want to hone up cylinders, all I know is i'm going to do it to any car or mine that has the head off :)
