you'd have to take the pistons out AND possibly replace the rings BECAUSE IF you just 'hone' the cylinders with the pistons in, you'll not be able to 'hone' up to the place where the rings are at the very bottom of their stroke, so what you'll get is a cylinder that's contains partially 'glazed' surface and mostly 'honed' at the upper, say, 90%. The rings will move from the smooth surface to the 'honed' surface, many times per second. Two things will happen, 1) the rings will tend to rotate and/or agitate while making contact with the 'honed' surface after moving from the smooth surface, thus accelerating wear on the rings, especially since they're not new. 2) As mentioned before, "honing" is performed on a re-bored cylinder to accommodate 'mating' NEW piston rings. If you decide to 'hone' your engine cylinders, be sure to install NEW piston rings, or you'll be re-building your engine shortly thereafter. The old rings have already mated perfectly to your cylinders, so it's best to leave them alone. Even Formula 1 engineers desire a 'glazed' cylinder to one with a cross-hatch pattern, in fact, after they rebuild an engine, they use procedures to accelerate the removal of the cross-hatches. Good luck in your endeavor.
