design temp the more efficient it operates.
The modulated electric fan was installed to only remove excess BTU's from the coolant in a energy conserving way. It only cosumes power when it is called upon. That power comes from the gas tank.
The old cars with the belt driven fan ran all the time, when gas economy became paramount the temp. clutch was installed only kicking in the drive to the fan when the overly hot air from the overly hot radiator warmed up the clutch unit.
Then the designers wanted the freedom to place the engines in different positions and the beancounters (excuse me you accoutant majors out there) wanted cheaper engineering solutions to keep the car going.
This resulted in the pancaked electric motor. Mass production made it cheaper than the heavy castings of the fan blade mounts, and it only ran when the heat switch kicked in. The switch was made heavy enough to get the car thru warranty with out using a money gouging relay to switch the power cause the customer can be billed for the radiator mounted switch by the shop instead of a customer's mom replacing the relay for close to little $. The fan does have a limited life and you will approach it faster than if you kept it switched with a new (and they don't cost that much) thermoswitch. Besides, if you wire the switch to a proper current rated relay, the thermo is in forever. It won't handle the power anymore.
Run it hot as possible for effeciency and your fuel economy, sparkplug life, and the exhaust system lasts longer.
