Five to 7 K should be fine with synthetics. Ten K is a reasonable interval with synthetics, but I feel more comfortable with 5K. Five K feels good for me because I drive about 15 K per year. That allows me to put a lighter weight in for the four major winter months, and a heavier weight for the summer months. Yes, I could conceivably go 10 K on the spring/summer oil, but I sleep better changing that oil in mid-summer. Oil is extremely important, so milking every last mile out of it doesn't seem to me like a good thing to do. And even synthetic oil isn't so expensive that you have to skimp on it. On the other hand, it's nuts to change synthetic every 3 K, so why do it unless you have money to burn? I also use premium filters and change them at 5 K, mostly because A) they're premium filters and B) the 5 K change fits into my maintenance schedule. More important than an actual number: Decide on a reasonable schedule that seems to fit your needs, then stick to it.
