How Does The LPT Work??

OK, now I'm confused. I have been reading the various threads on LPT-to-FPT conversion, MBCs, etc. and I think I pretty much understand how boost levels are controlled by the FPT. That is, the engine management system is able to control boost by manipulating the BPC to control pressure to the wastegate. Knock control, mixture, ignition advance, fuel shut-off, etc, are all controlled thru their systems by the ECM. Now what confuses me is since the LPT does not have control of wastegate activation i.e it does not have a BCP and the wastegate is activated purely on boost pressure; how does it control max boost levels. It seems to me that the LPT is only capable of controlling boost via the other engine management controls, such as fuel shut-off. Which would be a pretty brutal method as normal course.
Obviously thru the different threads the ECM is different between the LPT and FPT, so does anyone know how this all works? That is, exactly how does the LPT operate versus the FPT in regards to boost control, ignition timing and mixture control?
Thanks in advance to anyone who dares to enter this topic.
