My '96 Aero manual transmission suffers at my ruthless hands at nearly 160K miles and doesn't complain. Some day it will, I'm sure. My '87 transmission eventually refused to stay in 5th gear at about 192K miles.
From what I've seen here, the manual transmission stands up to abuse significantly better than the auto. However, both will last longer when treated sensibly.
While I don't like auto transmissions, I agree that a properly set up turbo engine (like the Saab turbos) is a much better match with an auto box than a normally-aspirated engine.
