makes all of the difference. I also think that automatics tend to work better with supercharged (I once owned a VW Corrado) and turbos. While five speeds are usually rated as being faster (by 5 to 8 tenths of a second) in most road tests, bear in mind these are times recorded by professional drivers who drive/abuse the car in ways most owners wouldn't consider. Yes, if you hit every shift just right they are faster, but how many people can do that consistently in real world conditions? Race two identical Saab turbos (one 5spd, one auto)ten times, and with 90% of the drivers the auto will win at least five times. Finally, as much as I love Saabs, the shift linkages on the manuals leave much to be desired--which is true of most front-wheel-drive cars.
