Transmission pieces in oil

Drained my 76 99 manual transmission oil and besides the usual shavings on the magnet, there were some fairly large pieces, some long (over an inch) and thin. I fear my transmission is on it's last leg.
This is the original transmission with over 230k on it. It has the primary gears, not the chains.
What are my options? Is it rebuildable? Are parts available? Should I upgrade? Is a 5 spd from a newer 900 retrofitable?
