Think strips, like shavings / filaments? Or thicker than that?
Do you get gear-whine in any of the gears? Could be teeth starting to chew each other up, in which case it might not be a good candidate for a rebuild anyhow since you would be re-using your existing gearset and ring gear / pinion set.
The surface finish of the teeth on the ring gear and spider gears in the diff are usually a pretty good indicator, if the meshing surfaces of the teeth (shiny bright silver areas) are pitted or rough looking it's probably not re-useable, and you should hunt for another one.
Not reuseable from the perspective of how much $$ you'd put into a rebuild only to be using worn out pieces.
This photo is a spare box I pulled from an '82 900T parts car I bought to practice pulling apart - I never ran it, so don't know if it was noisy or not, I suspect it probably was though. All the internal parts were in very bad shape.
