Well, pieces of metal in the trans are not good. The trans can be rebuilt, but at this point getting parts is a headache (chrush sleeve, shift forks, etc. - most bearings should be do-able, and I think synchro rings are available. With some work you can put in a 5-speed, but it's a trade-off. The car is a nicer highway cruiser, but the 5-speed shift linkage is vague and hard to shift compared to the 4-speed. The same parts issues are there to some extent with the 5-speed, if you can find a good used non-turbo box that might be OK (the Turbo ones tended to get a lot more abuse for obvious reasons). If you want to rebuild your existing box, you might want to check with somebody like Chip Lamb to see if anyone is doing that work, but I don't expect it would be inexpensive.
