LJB, I've had several '75 up 99's. Hands down '73-'74 Djets are much more fun and a lot faster. The reason why is the Djet, NOT the cam. There is a myth that the cams that apply to these years are the reason, but it simply is not the case. The cams are slightly hotter, but not enough to go out a pursue one. Most '73-'74 99's left around have later cams or 12 cog motors with Djet intakes on them anyways. If you want to pursue a real upgrade from an early motor, go after an 8 cog driveshaft and waterpump. There have also through the years, been many changes to the transmissions due to repairs and upgrades. If you have an original, unmolested '72-'74 2.0 Djet, you will outperform any year. As far as top end goes, I've had both of mine over 100mph with plenty more to go, but the RPM's and tranny noise indicate it isn't wise. Nothing beats a 5-speed. However, most folks like to think the K-jet motors are faster due to higher Horsepower ratings, or top end statistics from old Road and Track magazines. I drove my old '78 99 at that same speed years earlier, and it felt like there was less to go, and that one had headers and a performance exhaust. I'm not saying everything about Djet is superior, there were obvious quirks and shortcomings. However, had Saab stuck with it, and refined it a bit, the result would have been a vastly superior product. My opinion is simply my view on the matter, and not meant to cause an argument, but, I will say this...Djet rules!
