When my car got hit, it wasn't a battle to get blame applied correctly but a real chore to get any money for the car. It was bad, but not "totalled" but since according to the insurance people, my car was only worth about $900 it was not worth fixing. I recently done a lot of work and new the cost of having someone else do it so I wrote that all down. They didnt' care, really, 'cause a car worth 900 bucks, even if everything was in tip-top shape, was still only worth 900 bucks. What changed their minds was giving them repeated evidence of these cars selling for more. I found as many cars like mine that had sold recently and called scanwest, Larry west, etc. to see if they'd be willing to write something indicating the possible worth of these cars. A friend of mine had recently sold his similarly equipped car for 4-5 grand and I had him write a letter as well. Had I known Doug at the time, I'd have begged for a letter as well. What this amounted to was an increase in worth, according to the insurance assessor, of almost 4000 dollars. I was allowed to keep the "totalled" car (which I still drive everyday) and received 4800 from the insurance company. The car will never be worth that again due to the accident, but it was a gentler hit to say the least. As well, the insurance company (state farm) had one option for a '76 99. They had no idea what an EMS was, a wagonback, etc. Their info is not even complete.

Good luck and don't give up on things. Even if you never fix the car, you should at least be able to recoup some of your loss.

Another thing, though I know changing the transmission on these cars is not for everyone and when I say it's an easy enough thing I'm not being honest because I've done it many times and the first time took me forever...but I don't think I've ever paid more than 500 for a used 900 transmission.
