I've owned 3 Saab 96s - one 2-stroker and two V4s. The latest one I've had for over 4 years and put 30,000 miles on it, mostly commuting to my old job (about 70 miles round trip) at 70-80 mph. Only stranded me once when I replaced the distributor and the new part failed.
Well maintained these cars are very reliable and have a totally fun and unique driving personality. During the 60s they were top notch rally cars so you'll enjoy the handling very much. Stock they run nicely (about 65 hp), but with some tweaking, they can add another 25-50% in power for even more fun.
The transmissions are the weak link - be sure to only use the right gear lube and change it every other oil change (very easy to do).
Watch out for rust in the back of the engine compartment, door bottoms, floors and trunk. Desert/West coast cars are pretty rust free if they've spent their lives there and East coast cars have better preserved interiors but suffer more rust problems.
And more than anything else, you'll find this board to be an excellent support group for you owning and enjoying your 96. I've never asked a question that someone didn't answer to my satisfaction.
Saabers rule.
