Great input so far, but my 2 cents on the power/handling issues.
I drive a two-stroke 96 daily, and for the engine displacment and HP it is plesantly powerful. But when shooting for daunting hills you really gotta run at them and try to hold third gear. So, I can imagine that the v4's would be great for driving long distance. As far as giving them a boost, the two-strokes are a bit more difficult and expensive to hop-up, while the v4s have a good community for getting more power out. Jack Lawrence, Jack Ashcraft, and Chris Moberg all have lots of experience with the v4s, remember their names.
Handling in these cars is good. I own a Sonett III and the 96 and have driven a handful of other VSAABs and for the most part driving a 96 daily has given me some arm strenght ;). The Sonett is a much better handling vehicle, comparable to an era Porshe 911 some say. Handling can be improved with a little bit of lowering at the corners, and a rebushing of the suspension bits.
A spot in the handling some people over look is the rear axle. It has a small amount of steering that I find to be a bit annoying, stiffer bushings can make it a little less noticable. The area the bushings mount for the rear axle also tends to lose rigidity over time and can affect the feel of the car. check this area.
