Ok, will check on the valve seats. How do you install hardened ones/where do you get them? I sort of thought they were just part of the head? Yeah, the problem is I know basically nothing of the history of the engine...The guy I bought it from just had it for a year and basically didn't do anything to it except drive it to gigs and change oil once in a while, the guy before that I have no idea...It definitely has a new fuel pump which is why I don't want to mess with that...I checked the balance shaft as BobD mentioned, there doesn't seem to be any play at all, so that seems okay. I think the reason my gears broke (besides 160,000 miles) is that when I bought the car the carb was not properly adjusted and was idling rough, combined with the engine mounts being really screwed up, allowing the whole thing to vibrate much more freely than it should be able to. Thats my guess anyways. The engine was running great before...if I get the compression tested and it's good is that a pretty good indicator that I don't need to do alot to it? Anyway, just about to pull the engine out, I'm sure things will make much more sense once I start taking things apart. Thanks for the help.
