Pete, since this engine was smoking you should carefully check the piston to bore clearance. Pretty unusual for a piston to come out (easily) past a sizable ridge. Makes me expect that the clearance will be way out. Never saw a V4 with crumbled B.S. and cam bearings. Did see B.S. bearings hurt from chronic over tightening of the V-belt. For future reference; before engine disassembly do both a wet and dry compression test then you'll have some idea of the status of rings/bore and valve clearances. Often burning oil is a cause for a valve job only. Get hardened exhaust valve seats installed in your heads too. If you want to get your cam reground I used to know a shop in Illinois that did those (I'll see if I can find that info). Ashcraft may have them also. Of course there are a lot more V4 engines floating around than cars so if it's too hurt I'd be looking for a replacement. I couldn't give 'em away a few years ago. Good luck.
