Hi Larry,
My motto is "proceed without fear!" I'll tear into pretty much anything on a car, truck, or tractor. Something my Dad taught me...
You have to understand Jack. He's spent decades talking on the phone with every sort of person across the spectrum of experience. In his mind, there's only one way to do it, and that's to do a complete teardown, inspection, bearing replacement, and proper setup of all tolerances. Anything else to him, is just half way (or less) and is asking for trouble. His philosophy is that if you take the time to take it out of the car and apart, then take the time and expense to fix it ONCE for a long time. As a guy in business, you can't do anything any different. He's talked to 1000 guys like me and had half of them call up a month later wondering why their gearbox doesn't work right or is noisy, etc. This guy is in his late 70's and he still is patient in all his explanations and is willing to share what he knows. I fully and completely understand why he doesn't condone what I'm doing. But maybe I'll get lucky again or maybe this won't turn out so good. We'll see.
As to synchro's- new ones are not easy to get for these cars. Swedish Saab Club is the only source I know of.
As to the depth gauge measurement to set up the rear cover shims- see Jim William's most excellent "Sonett Saga" site for a complete description and pictures. Just google on "sonett saga" and it'll come up. Left hand side has a link for "Transmission autopsy" or something similar.
Thanks for the encouragement- glad it was somewhat helpful.
Finally, one other thing I learned over the last couple of years- used transmissions are NOT what they appear to be. I was looking for a spare for my 2nd Sonett a year ago and a number of kind VSaab lovers offered "good" spares to me to buy. I always insisted that they take off the top cover, take a picture and send it to me. To their shock and surprise, almost all of them had signficant RUST on the gears and components above the gear oil line, including the ring gear! Same with the 9 I took apart this Christmas vacation. Lots and lots of rust. So I fear the supply is dimenisioning. If you have a treasured spare gearbox or three, do one of two things: fill it to the top with oil (even engine oil is fine) or rotate the gears a couple of times a year.
I've been intending to write an article for Vintage Views (the VSCNA magazine) about all this including some pictures. Ray, the editor, saw my post here and sent me an email telling me to hurry up and get it done! I'll be able to share more detail than I have here. Look for it in the next issue.
